Webb girls capture state championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Freshman Molly Melton scored 17 points to lead Knoxville Webb to the TSSAA Division II-A girls state title with a 41-34 win Saturday over defending champion Franklin Road Academy.

Junior Kelly Vittetoe added 12 points for the Lady Spartans (26-6) in a rematch of last year's championship game. Webb also won the D-II Class AA girls' title in 2009 and the D-II crown in 2007.

FRA junior Derica Wyatt, who added the 2012 Miss Basketball award to her 2010 honor, was held to 11 points for the Lady Panthers (31-5).

Melton, the tournament MVP, had seven second-quarter points, including two free throws on an FRA technical, as Webb outscored the Lady Panthers 14-5. She also hit a 3-pointer that bounced in on the third-quarter buzzer after Mariah Canday's 3 helped cut Webb's 13-point lead to 29-21.

Melton sank another 3-pointer with 6:38 remaining, and Vittetoe and Melton had back-to-back baskets after Christine Matthews pulled FRA within 35-27. Matthews' eight points all came in the final quarter.
