Weekend clinics make rabies vaccinations cheap and easy

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Knox Co. Health Dept. and the Knoxville Veterinarian Medical Association are teaming up to make getting your pet vaccinated against rabies cheap and convenient, according to Mayor Tim Burchett's Office.

Over the course of the first two Saturdays in May, they will be offering rabies vaccinations for $10 per animal at 34 locations across the city. (See full list below) Both clinics will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“Rabies is almost always fatal in animals and humans, which is why rabies vaccination is a public health priority,” said Martha Buchanan, MD, Knox County Health Department director. “When an unvaccinated pet comes in contact with a rabid animal, it can spread the disease to its human family.”

All pets must be restrained when they come in for their vaccination. Dogs need to be on a leash, cats should be in a carrier or pillowcase. In fact the Mayor's Office said they would prefer cats were in a pillowcase, so they can administer the vaccine right through the cloth.

If your dog can be aggressive, unruly, or uncontrollable, you're asked to leave them in the car and go to the registration desk for assistance.
