BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- The National Mobility Equipment Dealer's Association celebrates Mobility Awareness Month by giving away three wheelchair accessible vans. Your vote could help one local teen win the van he needs to explore the world.
Jezreel Rubio is a 15-year-old full of life and energy but he suffers from Mitochondrial Disease. A genetic disorder that causes the mitochondria or "powerhouse of the cell" from making enough energy for the cell to survive.
Dr. Mike Green said "The disease affects Jezreel's organs especially his brain which causes seizures and effects his thinking, seeing, hearing and talking."
He's confined to a wheelchair and without the help of both parents he's stuck inside his home.
"My husband works and without his help I can't pick Jezreel up and put him into the van. So we have to stay at home and make the best of our situation." said Nancy Rubio, Jezreel's mother.
But there is some hope for the Rubio family through an online contest celebrating National Mobility Awareness Month.
Nancy said "There are 3 wheelchair accessible vans up for grabs for the people that get the most votes! We only have 1600 votes right now and the top person has 60,000."
The Rubio's are trying to get to the top by May 10th so they are asking you for all the help they can get.
