PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Pigeon Forge Tourism leaders are excited about a record number of people who've attended the Wilderness Wildlife Week so far this year. Typically 20,000 people attend the event each year.

Wilderness Wildlife Week offers people a chance to explore the history and culture of the Great Smoky Mountains. From live animals, to wood carving, even learning about the folk music of the area, organizers say they've tried to put something together for every member of the family.

Lynne McCoy, a Wildlife Rehabilitator, says she believes it's important for people to understand what in nature is a part of the Smokies.
"We try to keep a connection with nature so that it's not all of the internet and look at your computer and that you know what's out there because they're all connected to us," said McCoy.

From its inception, Wilderness Wildlife Week™ was intended to be an event committed to the education and enjoyment of the public as to the wonders of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This is the 23rd year for the event and all events are at the Music Road Hotel and Convention Center, and admission is free.

Wilderness Wildlife Week continues through next Saturday (Jan. 19).
