MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. (AP) -- A grand jury in East Tennessee has charged a woman with a misdemeanor count of corpse abuse after her newborn was found in a garbage can.
Prosecutor Berkeley Bell told the Kingsport Times-News the investigation of 36-year-old Kathyrn Condrey of Mount Carmel had focused on homicide prior to the indictment being returned Monday.
The grand jury opted not to indict on a homicide charge. An autopsy did not determine whether the infant had been born alive and did not establish a cause of death.
Condrey's estranged husband found the body in April.
