ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One woman is dead following an early morning house fire at an apartment building in Alcoa on Thursday.
According to the city police dept., emergency crews were called to the home, 340 Sanderson Street, shortly after 2:00 a.m. when a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the apartment.
When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke billowing from the apartment and found the fire burning in the front living room and starting to spread toward other parts of the apartment.
They found the woman unconscious and tried performing CPR before transporting her to Blount Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
One of the firefighters, Dan Harris, broke his leg while trying to supply water to battle the flames.
Several other tenants were displaced by the blaze and are being helped by the American Red Cross.
