LUTTRELL, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Officials are calling several fires which erupted near each other in Union Co. Thursday morning suspicious. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the brush fires, but also had to contend with a barn fire on Hickory Valley Rd.
All of the fires occurred within three miles of each other.
One of the fires burned about 20 acres of woodland on Dan Shumate Road. A smaller blaze was contained to about one and one-half acres after burning brush and grass on Texas Holler Road. The third brush fire happened on Chesnut Ridge Road.
The North East Union Volunteer Fire Department said the fires all started between 2 and 2:30AM, and said they're suspicious.
"Unless we've got mice with matches around here - yeah, I think somebody's setting them," said Chief Gordon Sartain.
"They had everything blocked off and it was really bad and we were afraid it would get to our homes," said Mary Allen, who lives on Texas Holler Road.
No homes were damaged by the fires and no one was injured.
Sartain said brush and barn fires are starting to happen frequently in Union County. In fact, he said two barns burned down on the same night two weeks ago and said those fires are also suspicious.
No word yet on any possible suspects.
