Commissioners: downsizing body could give minority voters fewer voices

Posted: 11/05/2008 - Charter Amendment #3 bans Knox County commissioners from voting on issues in which they hold a personal or financial interest. They also are prohibited from hiring their relatives. Voters will downsize the commission body from 19 members to 11: one Commissioner per district plus two new at-large members. Commissioners claim the downsizing re-raises questions regarding term limits and district lines, and raises new issues governing minority representation.
