UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say a petition has been filed to charge an Obion County teenager in the fatal shooting of his father.
Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder said the 17-year-old, who was not identified, has a hearing scheduled Thursday in Obion County Juvenile Court.
Authorities said 40-year-old Vernon Dale Putnam Jr. was shot at the family's home on Thursday during a family dispute. Vastbinder said Putnam pointed a rifle at his son, then pointed it at his wife, Polly Putnam, and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired and his wife fled the home.
Putnam then walked outside and fired several rounds into a car. The sheriff said that when Putnam came back inside, his son shot him twice.
The Union City Messenger reported criminal charges would require the boy's case to be transfered to adult court.
