Knoxville to start recycling program just in time for Earth Day

KNOXILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- Today, many around the country are celebrating, or at least thinking of ways to honor Mother Nature, for Earth Day.

Volunteer TV Early's Whitney Kent has more a brand new program- that brings the recycling center right to your home.

It's called "Do Your Part with the Cart" and it's a free and simple way to recycle in Knoxville from your home.

In order to participate you need to sign up at or call 3-1-1. After you sign up you will receive a free cart or bin in September for all your recyclable items. Then in October the pick up service beings.

This program is different from others because you don't need to sort your items. You toss your recyclables in the provided bin or cart and put it on your curb to be picked up!

An easy process for any family in Knoxville that will reduce the amount of trash that is sent to our local landfill. Experts tell us that 75-80% of your garbage is recyclable and those items include:

Plastics (plastic bottles, plastic jugs, milk jugs, detergent containers,
all plastic containers #1-7)

Metals (aluminum cans, steel cans, tin cans)

Glass (glass bottles, glass jars *brown, clear, green only*)

Paper (newspaper, magazines, junk mail, office paper, cereal boxes, cardboard)

However, this program does not accept:

Aluminum foil
Food waste
Hazardous waste
Light bulbs
Medical waste
Plastic bags
Shrink wrap
Window glass
Yard waste
