NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Heavy rain falling on Tennessee is forcing the partial evacuation of a military base near Memphis and has contributed to a highway crash that shut down an interstate highway north of Nashville.
Several school systems are closed, some for a second day, in the wake of rainstorms that have knocked down limbs, power lines and are forcing some streams out of their banks.
Military officials have moved 122 personnel from the naval support base at Millington in West Tennessee to hotels after a stream began flooding a low-lying section of the base, just north of Memphis, according to WMC-TV.
A crash was reported early Wednesday by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, closing the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 in Sumner County, just north of Nashville.
