Knoxville (WVLT) Sundown in the City is just one of the many events kicking off the spring season here in Knoxville, but will recent events like Tuesday night's shooting at Red Iguana keep people from taking part in the festivities?
Volunteer TV's Whitney Daniel joins us with a look at what's going on this weekend and how police have your back when it comes to your safety.
A lot going on this weekend, we had Sundown tonight, then tomorrow begins Festival on the Square in conjunction with the Dogwoods Arts Festival, and Saturday we'll all be marching down Gay Street for the Dogwood Arts Festival Parade.
Knoxvillians say they won't let this week's crime rain on their parade.
"I think you can find trouble anywhere," concert goer Debbie Palmer said.
But police are making sure you don't find it this weekend during Sundown in the City or the Dogwood Arts Festival Events. When Knoxville hosts a big event, they make sure you're protected.
"They got plenty of police around and stuff like that so you don't really have to worry about it too much," concert goer Daniel Lasris said.
But with a shooting this week at a downtown club.
"They're going to happen regardless. It doesn't make me very nervous," concert goer Jessica Hendricks said.
And with Sundown in the City and Dogwood Arts taking over the town, police are on high alert.
"It really doesn't make me nervous," Palmer said.
And festival-goers say it shouldn't.
"With all the events that have happened here in Market Square, I don't think anything is going to deter the people from coming down," Lasris said.
Knoxvillians say the recent violence won't stop them from heading to the festivities.
"It's such a community involved area with everyone around. When you have a lot of people walking in an area like this where everything's really confined, it doesn't make me nervous, it actually makes me feel safer," Hendricks said.
Although police will be out and about this weekend at all the events, you still need to take precautions to make sure you don't end up in a bad situation.
Police say use common sense and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
