Knoxville (AP) -- Country music singer Deana Carter will headline the University of Tennessee's new Kickoff to Commencement celebration.
Carter, a UT alumna, will perform May 9th in the Humanities Amphitheater. Mixed with her songs, Carter will talk about her memories of UT.
A university-wide commencement ceremony will not be held this year because of ongoing renovation in Thompson-Boling Arena. Individual colleges will hold their own ceremonies, and a committee of students and staff planned the kickoff event.
Carter's 1996 debut album "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" went multiplatinum, and her breakthrough hit "Strawberry Wine" won Country Music Association Song Of The Year in 1997.
College commencement ceremonies will be held May 9th to 11th at different locations.
