ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Rogersville police say it's an horrific case of child abuse. A 1-year-old girl with burns, bruises, and bite marks allegedly inflicted at the hands of her own mother, Bonnie Carroll. "We do know that there's marks all over the body. This one here, this one's pretty bad too," said Detective Charlie Gibson.

Carroll is locked up in Hawkins County. Her lover, Joey Waye, also suspected in the abuse, is locked up in Hamblen County. His arrest in connection with a massive car burglary spree sparked the abuse probe.

The girl's mother denies wrongdoing. "Mama says she left the girl with the boyfriend. He says she fell off the bed," said Gibson.

Carroll is charged with child neglect so far. Waye, a Georgia parole violator, faces unrelated burglary charges in Hamblen County. Both could soon face more serious abuse charges.

Said Gibson, "it shouldn't be, it shouldn't happen to a small child like that."

The girl and her sister have been placed in the custody of their biological father.
