19-month-old dies of asphyxia

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville Police believe a 19-month-old girl asphyxiated when she fell between her sibling's bed and a bedroom wall.

Friday evening just before 6:00, police, fire, and Rural/Metro responders went to the Big Oaks Apartments at 3807 Middlebook Pike to check out a medical issue concerning the toddler. She was taken to UT Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say Ta'mieriah Marsh's mother put her in her toddler bed to take a nap. Sometime during the nap, the girl apparently woke up and climbed into her older sibling's bed. When her mother went to check on her, she saw that Ta'mieriah was missing and found her wedged between the other bed and the wall, not breathing.

Ta'mieriah's mother and a neighbor tried to perform CPR on her before calling emergency responders.

The Department of Children's Services and Knoxville Police's Violent Crimes and Juvenile Crimes are also involved in the investigation, which police say is standard procedure in the death of a child.

The preliminary autopsy indicated asphyxia, but it will be several weeks before the final report is released.
