E. Coli Outbreak Connected to Fresh, Packaged Spinach

(WVLT) - If you've got a bag of fresh spinach in your refrigerator, don't eat it. It could make you very sick or even kill you. Health officials say raw, packaged spinach is likely the source of an E. Coli outbreak that has killed at least one person and made at least 49 other people sick. Cases have been reported in eight states, Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin, and California is investigating a possible case. Officials are issuing the warning nationwide because they don't know where the spinach comes from or how widely it is distributed. E. Coli causes diarrhea, often bloody. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week. But some people, particularly the very young and old, can develop a form of kidney failure that often leads to death.
