Jackson, Tenn. (AP) -- A City of Jackson employee was suspended after an investigation cited him for using racial slurs against black co-workers.
City personnel documents show Health and Sanitation Department equipment operator Johnny Byrd was accused of labeling the workers as "lazy monkeys" and other racial epithets.
City Personnel Director Lynn Henning says Byrd was suspended without pay from July 26th to August 8th for violating the city's policy that prohibits employees from making negative comments regarding race.
City employee Jerry Epperson, who is black, submitted the complaint leading to Byrd's suspension and says he should have been fired.
Byrd declined to comment when reached by the Jackson Sun newspaper.
Henning says Byrd did not admit to making the comments though she believes the allegations were true, based on her investigation.
