40% of Tennesseeans pay more than a third of income on rent

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) --- Is rent to high or are we making too little?

That's a question quite a few Tennesseans might be asking when they look over the monthly bills.

The Center for Housing Policy found that nationwide one in four of us pay half our income in rent.

In Tennessee 40% of us are handing over one third.

Many have to use programs like Section 8 to balance the checkbooks.

It doesn't look like the numbers are improving, according to the CHP the housing cost burden has risen every year since 2008.
