World War II Veteran Honored for Heroism 60 Years Later

Knoxville (WVLT) - He served one of the most dangerous jobs in World War II, and he lived to tell about it.

And now, more than 60 years later, he was honored for his courage.

General B.B. Bell was in Knoxville today to present Private First Class Raymond C. Smith with several medals including the Bronze Star.

Private Smith served in the Pacific Theater for 29 months as a forward observer.

The Army says the average life expectancy for a forward observer was ten minutes because all enemy fire was aimed at them.

Smith was never injured.
