Gatlinburg, Sevier County (AP) -- Heavy overnight rain in the Smokies caused a rock slide that has closed part of Little River Road.
The National Park Service says the section of the road between the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area and the Townsend entrance of the park is closed while heavy equipment is brought in to remove several large boulders.
Traffic from Townsend can reach Cades Cove, but driving from the Cove to Gatlinburg will require detouring onto US 321 into Pigeon Forge.
Park spokesman Bob Miller says the slide is in the narrowest part of the River Gorge, where there's no room to divert traffic around the work site.
