Elkhorn City, KY (AP) - A miner died today in Eastern Kentucky after a vehicle mishap, the 15th mine fatality this year.
Section foreman Tony Swieney was dragging a large electrical cable behind a motorized coal scoop at the McCoy Elkhorn Coal Company Number 23 Mine near Ashcamp in Pike County.
Mine safety and licensing spokesman Chuck Wolfe says the plug end of the cable was wrapped around a pole of the scoop canopy. Wolfe says it appears the cable became snagged, the plug end whipped loose from the pole, and the 44 year old Swieney was hit in the head.
Swieney was conscious but not communicating when he was brought out of the mine and died enroute to a hospital.
