Niota, McMinn County (AP) -- Voters in Niota have elected James Wayne Cagle to the City Commission, apparently unaware he was facing misdemeanor charges and on the sheriff's most wanted list in neighboring Monroe County.
Cagle received 93 votes in Tuesday's city commission election, edging incumbent Allen J. Watkins by one vote.
The Daily Post-Athenian in Athens reports that Cagle was also on the Monroe County Sheriffs Departments Ten Most Wanted list published in the Monroe County Advocate & Democrat newspaper on October 29th and November 5th.
Officials say records show Cagle is wanted for failure to appear in court on charges of driving on a revoked license this year and for writing a bad check to a grocery store in 2004.
Records show Cagle's driving privileges were revoked after he was cited for failure to show proof of insurance.
Cagle could not be reached by telephone for comment and the Monroe County Sheriff's Department did not return a call seeking comment.
Niota's mayor-elect, Martha Walden, said it's sad for Niota.
