Ardmore, Tenn. (AP) -- Officers shot and killed an Illinois man early Monday morning at a rest stop in Giles County near the Alabama border.
Officers said Gregory Smith of South Holland, Illinois, told them he killed his wife, and then fired shots at them.
Giles County Sheriff's Deputies and Ardmore Police said they found Smith in a car in a welcome center parking lot, and tried for about 45 minutes to get him to surrender.
Both police and sheriff's deputies said they returned fire after Smith started shooting at them.
South Holland Police officers found Smith's wife, Ingrid Smith, dead in their home on Sunday morning. She had been shot multiple times, and investigators have determined that her husband was responsible.
