Al-Jazeera English Now On The Air

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Al-Jazeera is now on the air in English but few Americans will see it.

At 7:00 a.m., Eastern Time, from the station's headquarters in the capital of Qatar, a male anchor said in English, "its November 15th, day one of a new era in television news."

Launched ten years ago by Qatar's royal family, Al-jazeera's feisty Arabic news channel is well known for angering leaders in the West and the Arab world.

Al-Jazeera says its signal will reach 80 million households with cable and satellite TV, mainly in the Middle East and Europe.

But no major US cable or satellite company has agreed to carry it. A spokesman for Al-Jazeera says some US cable carriers are waiting to see what sort of reaction the station generates before picking it up. Broadband internet users can get it.
