United Nations (AP) -- The president of Iran is calling on the American people to demand the pullout of US troops from Iraq.
In an open letter, released today by Iran's mission to the United Nations, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also urges Americans to reject the Bush administration's policies in the war on terrorism.
And he issues an appeal to the new Democratic-controlled Congress. The Iranian president says Americans "showed their discontent" with Bush's policies in the midterm elections, and that it's up to lawmakers to change course.
The letter claims that the US invasion of Iraq led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and an expansion of terrorism, and that it destroyed Iraq's infrastructure.
Citing the cost of the Iraq war, the Iranian president said Americans should instead spend their money on domestic problems, like helping the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
