A LOCAL 8 WEATHER ALERT is in effect into Wednesday due repeated rainfall. A Flood Watch is in effect for our area until 7 AM Wednesday. Where there are more pauses in the rain, totals will be closer to 2 inches but some will receive at least 4 inches of rainfall total. Creeks and streams run high and areas with poor runoff could face flooding problems. Busy commute hours could face more slowdowns, with fog and standing water on roads as well.
Gatlinburg, Sevier County (AP) -- The National Park Service has closed a section of the Trillium Gap Trail above Gatlinburg.
The 1.3-mile section of the trail is between the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and Grotto Falls.
Rangers are worried about falling rocks and potential mud slides because of soaking rain.
Three large hemlock trees have fallen down a steep slope and have caused the hillside above the trail to become unstable, causing further erosion and making the area unsafe for public use.
The slide area is one-quarter mile from the trailhead located off Roaring Fork.
The trail section will be closed at least until spring.
Two other trails remain closed to horseback riders after a windstorm in October. Uprooted trees crumbled sections of the Lower Mount Cammerer Trail and Gregory Bald Trail. Those trails are expected to open in the spring.
