Nashville (AP) -- State Senate Democrats Thursday afternoon voted for John Wilder to be their candidate for speaker of the General Assembly's upper chamber.
It's a post the 85-year-old Mason Democrat has held since 1971.
Wilder is looking to extend what may be the longest consecutive leadership of a legislative chamber in US history.
The Senate Speaker is also Lieutenant Governor and first in the line of succession to become Governor.
