Knoxville (AP) -- Federal prosecutors Thursday announced a major settlement with a Knoxville-based heart surgeons group.
East Tennessee Heart Consultants has agreed to pay $1.7 million to the state and federal government to settle claims that it improperly withheld Medicare and TennCare overpayments since 1999.
The 42-physician group also agreed to reimburse more than 11,000 patients and their insurance companies $1.2 million for overpayments they made.
This in addition to more than $700,000 the group has already repaid since prosecutors confronted the company.
East Tennessee Heart Consultants denies any wrongdoing. It will avoid any criminal charges through the settlement. The group has 21 offices and clinics in the greater Knoxville area.
