Knox County (WVLT) - The first two residents are settling in at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Nursing Home.
It's a project Knox County officials have been working on since 2002, and Thursday the dream finally came to fruition.
The 74,600 square foot facility has 140 beds, and it sits on 14 acres of donated land from Knox County.
One of the veterans who moved in Thursday says it's wonderful there is a facility right here in our back yard.
"Well, I get to stay in East Tennessee, which I think is the prettiest part of the country. Not just the state, but the whole country," veteran Charlie Samples said.
It's critically important because these are the men and women who have preserved the liberty and defended freedom across the world, and the great quality of life we enjoy today is due in absolutely no small part to their tremendous efforts," Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale said.
Knox County was selected as the site for the new veterans home in 2004, and ground was broken on the home back in the spring of 2005.
