Audit: Shelby Co. Homeland Security Office Misued State Grant

Memphis (AP) -- An internal audit of the Shelby County Homeland Security Office shows the department incorrectly used funds from a state grant.

The audit was requested by Shelby County commissioners.

It found the department used grant money to purchase $250,000 worth of office items, such as copy paper, furniture and cell phones.

The money was to be spent instead on equipment, training and planning for major terror events.

The county had to reimburse the money.

Expenses that the grant did cover, such as training programs, cost Shelby County an additional $9,000 because the Homeland Security Office failed to follow proper procedure in getting the expenses approved in advance.
