Fort Pierce, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a Nashville, Tennessee, man who was combative and acting erratically outside a fort pierce gas station died after being tasered at least twice by police trying to restrain him.
Police say a witness flagged down officers after Douglas John Ilten began throwing musical instruments out of a truck parked at the gas station Saturday morning.
Acting Police Chief Sean Baldwin says Ilten violently resisted attempts to search him and restrain his legs. One officer then shocked Ilten with his stun gun at least twice.
Baldwin says the officers noticed Ilten was not breathing moments after he was shocked. They performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Ilten was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay until a review is completed.
Ilten's wife says he was going to Fort Lauderdale to deliver band equipment to a cruise ship.
