Des Moines, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack is stepping down as chairman of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council and expects to be replaced by former US Senate candidate Harold Ford Junior of Memphis.
Vilsack said he was following a precedent set by former President Bill Clinton by leaving his DLC post to focus on his presidential campaign. Vilsack, a two-term governor, announced in December that he would seek the Democratic nomination.
Ford represented Memphis in the US House for ten years. He lost a close Senate race to Republican Bob Corker in November.
