Knoxville (WVLT) - Bread, milk and eggs are in high demand as folks cleared the shelves in the local grocery stores in preparation for the winter storm we're expecting.

Volunteer TV's Whitney Daniel has more.

The crowd has been steady at the Food City since three Wednesday afternoon. In fact, they ran out of buggies at one point in the evening.

"I'm trying to make sure I am comfortable because I am counting on good news tomorrow," said Mariana Davis, who's hoping for snow.

By good news, she means lots of snow. In fact, every time there's a snow scare, customers buy up the essentials: Bread. Milk. Eggs.

"Those are things they feel like if they do get snowed in and they do have to stay in a long time, they can still survive on," Tim Smith from Food City said.

Others pass on the essentials and go for the goodies.

"I got some pizza... pizza, chicken salad, spaghetti, all that good stuff," Marilyn and Bill White said.

Marilyn and Bill White says they're skeptical about the snow

"It may flake a little bit, but who knows," Bill White said.

Betty Catron says she's been waiting for snow since the Blizzard of '93.

"Where I live is a real curvy road. The blizzard, I didn't get out for five days, so you do kind of need essentials, so I think that what most people do," Catron said.

While many say they needed to make a grocery run anyway, others are stocking up.

"I got a few thing to snack on when I don't have to move away from the TV, and I will give that soup a try, and I've got bagels and cream cheese," Davis said.

And those who've been through it before know not to take a snow scare lightly.

"It's been about 15 years or so, but we got stuck for two weeks without power, so we know what it's like to camp and it's not fun," Tina Ellison said.

Managers say at this particular Food City store, they usually see about 1,000 people. On days like Wednesday, they expect about 1,500.
