Country Singer Troy Gentry Sentenced In Captive Bear Killing

Sandstone, Minn. (AP) -- A federal judge in Minnesota has sentenced country singer Troy Gentry to three months of probation and fined him $15,000 for killing a captive black bear in a fenced enclosure.

Gentry, of the country music duo Montgomery Gentry, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in November. Under a plea deal, he agreed to forfeit the bear and the bow he used during the hunt. The 600-pound bear has been part of a taxidermy display at Gentry's home in Tennessee.

Gentry also agreed to give up hunting in Minnesota for five years.

The bear was killed in October 2004 at the 80-acre Minnesota Wildlife Connection. Authorities say the owner of the facility, Lee Marvin Greenly, sold the bear for $4,600 and orchestrated the hunt, which Gentry videotaped and edited to make it look like the bear was killed in a fair chase hunt.

PROBATION??? This person (and I use that term loosely) committed a senseless act of cruelty on a TAME and CONFINED animal. $15,000 is chump change for a person like him. He (and Mr. Gentry) deserves procecution and penalty to the fullest extent of the law. The morals and ethics of these people (and anyone who participates in a "canned hunt" are the lowest of the low. Shame, Shame, Shame!
