Knox County (WVLT) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released the names of the three people killed in an accident last night in South Knox County.
The accident happened just before 8:30pm Thursday night, near East Marine Road.
Officials say 47 year-old Rex Owenby of Seymour was driving south on Chapman Highway when he crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a Honda Accord head-on.
Owenby died in the crash, along with a passenger in his car, 56 year-old David Headrick.
The driver of the Honda, 46 year-old Scott Hawn, also died.
Police say none of the three people killed were wearing their seat belts.
They also say Owenby had been drinking and there are reports that his car did not have its headlights on.
The accident shut down traffic in both directions on Chapman Highway for at least four hours, standing many drivers with no where to go.
"I really can't see much, but I've been parked here for so long, my battery died on me," said Jeff Stevens, a stranded driver.
Another vehicle was involved in the crash.
Police say an SUV was behind the Honda Accord and did not have time to avoid the accident, but the driver was not hurt.
That driver was wearing his seat belt.
