Crews Searching Tennessee River

Knoxville (WVLT) - Crews continue to comb the waters of the Tennessee River underneath the Gay Street Bridge.

Police say a number of eyewitnesses saw an individual jump Thursday night just before seven. The Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad is using side-scan sonar, ROV, and underwater camera operations to try and locate the body. By using sonar, they can search large areas without having to deploy divers.

Friday, search teams used trained K-9 units to help them locate the highest-probability areas.

"The flow to this part of the river is so low right now that the chance of anyone who entered the water moving is very slim, so we'll continue operations until the area is cleared or until we come up with a different plan," Captain David Henderson from the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad said.

Meanwhile, Knoxville Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened and why.
