Fort Campbell (WVLT) - The murder trial for an East Tennessee soldier is scheduled to begin today at Fort Campbell.
Staff Sergeant Ray Girouard grew up in Sweetwater.
Prosecutors say the 24 year-old squad leader told his soldiers to cut three detainees free, kill them, and then cover up the crime by faking an attack last May in Iraq.
Girouard denies giving such an order and has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
Two other soldiers charged with murder in the incident say Girouard ordered the killings.
They pleaded guilty to murder charges and in exchange for their testimony, got reduced prison terms.
