Newsom, Christian Families Reaction To Rally

Knoxville (WVLT) -- The parents of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian are responding to the racially motivated rallies.

Volunteer TV's Kim Bedford sat down with them and found some differing opinions all around.

Chris Newsom's room is exactly how he left it the day he left for his date with girlfriend Channon Christian.

The brutally murdered young couple is at the center of the rallies.

"I don't see the purpose of the rallies," said Mary Newsom. "I don't think Chris would've been impressed with it or would've liked it. In fact, I think he might have been embarrassed by it."

Chris' mother, Mary, says the protesters are doing much more harm than good, but her husband, Hugh, disagrees.

"I don't object to their right to assemble and project their cause," said Hugh Newsom. "I think they feel they're doing it for Chris and Channon."

Hugh says he is, however, upset with the groups not having all of their facts straight.

"The police and District Attorney's Office have assured me that there was no parts missing from either body," Hugh said, "they have distorted that."

The Newsom's do agree that Chris and Channon's murder was as torturous as it was because of the color of their skin.

"Would they have done that to a black couple?" Hugh asked. "I don't think so."

"With all the things they did to them, what else could you call it but hate," said Mary.

But Channon Christian's father, Gary, says it wasn't about race.

"I think any kind of crime like that's a hate crime," said Gary Christian. Was it racial? No, I don't think so."

Gary says he doesn't like his daughter's pictures posted all over for the protesters personal agenda.

"I don't like anybody using my daughter," Gary said. "Everybody go home, Get this court over with. Let the people pay for what they did."

Whatever happens, the Newsom's say they just want their son to be honored.

"We love you Chris," the parents said.

The Newsom's say they, like the protesters, don't understand why the murder has not received national attention.

Mr. Christian tells us the protesters came to Channon's grave site recently and wants them to know that they better not enter onto the private property again.

So basically, Sad, you are saying that this was a hate crime because you are sure it must have been a hate crime. Your evidence is that in your own imagination they call him "white boy" and are motivated by race. Brilliant "logic", genius.

During the rape torture and murder I am positive these beasts would have uttered a racist term to their victims. You mean they didn't call Newsom "white boy" as they proceded to torture him. What did they call him, Sir? Of course they made remarks based on race, and that is what makes this crime a hate crime. What bothers me is that the defendants were coached to say they never made a remark about the race of the victims as the merily tortured them, one by one over agonizing hours.

I found this story by chance a few months back on the internet. I was horrified by the details, it never left my mind. Racist crime or not these sick-minded predators should never be allowed to wander the streets of America ever again!

To read about this case for the first time is so earth shattering and evil that most of us want some sort of pay back right then no waiting for a trial. We tried our best to label to deaths of Channon and Chris so we can attempt to understand. We cannot understand what was going on in the minds of those five ???????. I don’t know what to call them they have lost all concept of be human and animal is too good for them. No matter what the motivation was or is, labeling this a major hate crime would I think make it impossible for Knoxville to keep this case in the local jurisdiction for trial. And the city of Knoxville and the families of this two children need the trial to take place right there in front of the people of Knoxville.

Being as far away as I am, I can't tell what things are going around America. Quite a distance between the cultures of the two countries, and I don't even know IF I want to go there. I've had a few positive examples of people over there, however. Indira Ghandi was killed because he wanted peace. Galilei was charged and sentenced to death because he wanted truth. The children of Betty Williams were killed because who they were. I do not know what Channon and Chris were killed for. Everyone says things, they all have their theories, but it disgusts me that some use their fate for their own purposes. People who have left this world deserve peace, and they should not be dragged back as violently as they have. This is just not ok. My condolences for the families of Channon and Chris. Don't pity them however - they are in a better place. People who talk about them shoud be pitied, their parents for their loss, and most of all, who committed the crime. They have a worse future ahead of them.

My prayers are with the families of Chris and Channon. You have been through enough. As far as the media on this story - local media - you have your information, make sure the facts are correct, don't over exaggerate, the crimes are horrible enough. This info should be world wide. The faces of the criminals should be on the news worldwide so we can see who committed the horrific crimes. The public needs to be aware of the crime no matter what the color of the skin. It was a violent crime from one human to another human. You don't need to harrass the suffering families for any more info. .

The spiraling violent crime rate in South Florida has been suddenly, and measurably reduced. How? By enacting the 'stand your ground' law which allows potential crime victims to carry and use firearms when they are attacked, without fear of subsequent prosecution because they 'didn't attempt to flee'. Tennessee needs such a law, to give citizens the ability to personally prevent these kinds of barbaric atrocities in the future.

This crime is absolutely monstrous. However the white supremacists add insult to injury by taking the deaths of these young people to spread their propoganda. e these two young kids to rest in peace. Reagardless of what coverage it gotten I'm sure the culprits will get the death penalty. Of course their death will be pleasant compared to what they have inflicted on Christian and Channon. I think the real issue should not be what the main stream media does or does not report, but on justice being served in the courtroom.
