KNOX CO., Tenn. (WVLT) -- The Knox County Sheriff's Department says the death of 77-year-old man found over the weekend is suspicious. Deputies are awaiting autopsy results to know just what happened to Roe Tolliver.
Neighbors say now Tolliver can't believe he's gone, especially if there is someone to blame.
"I've known him for years and his children, said He's been a good neighbor you know."
Along Deaderick Road in South Knox County, neighbors are mourning the loss of Roe Tolliver.
"He was a good neighbor, of course, yeah, he'd always, when he'd go out, I'd throw my hand up at him or something," said neighbor Doris Walker.
"Roe, I've known, just about all my life, you know. Me and his kids grew up together. He was a good man. Took care of his kids," said next door neighbor Paul Bryan Perry.
The Knox County Sheriff's Department says Tolliver's body was found at his home Saturday. Deputies believe the 77-year-old had been dead for several days.
Neighbors say Roe Tolliver was an active man for his age. So when they didn't see him for days, they grew concerned. "I hadn't seen his vehicle going in and out, and I noticed that the mail hadn't been checked," said Walker.
Tolliver's nephew lives next door and went to check on him, finding the body. Now an autopsy is underway, while forensic officers continue to scour the home, looking for details.
"It was just a shock to all of us you know. Somebody that close. You know we were close to him. Knew him for a long time," said Perry. He says Tolliver's wife lived in a nearby nursing home, but a younger female friend also lived at the Deaderick home.
"I think she was a friend to him. I don't know her name or anything like that. I've seen her with him quite often," he said. Now Perry says she's nowhere to be found, and that's his only guess at what happened.
"Maybe the lady not being there anymore. That's basically the only thing I can think of."
Martha Dooley with the Knox County Sheriff's Department says the department has not yet released any information on why Tolliver's death is being investigated.
