Knoxville (WVLT) - The Knoxville Police Department is warning motorists to take your foot off the gas in school zones.
Knox County School's will open their doors Thursday and KPD says it will have officers at most, if not all, of the school zones in city limits.
Volunteer TV’s Mike McCarthy found out more about the speeding crack down as your kids crack the books at school.
KPD says the only thing they want burning up the roads near schools is these hot temperatures.
The two things KPD says you'll need Thursday morning, patience and your brakes.
Most school zones have a speed limit between 15 to 25 miles per hour, it depends on the type of road.
If you get caught speeding, you can expect to pay up to about $150.
Also, watch where you park, parents need to remember, the only place you're allowed to park is a designated parking space.
Anywhere else could land you a ticket.
Interim Superintendent Roy Mullins suggests having your kids take the bus.
That's if you live outside the parental responsibility zone.
More than 350 buses carry more than 54,000 students to and from school each day, the more that get on, the less traffic for police and you to handle.
"Interestingly enough, sometimes it's parents who create some of the problems and of course their natural defense is, ‘I have a child who goes to school here. I would never do anything purposefully wrong.’ And that's probably true, but we need to be cognizant of what's going on because if you're speeding, you're going to get a ticket,” says Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen.
If you’d like to find out where the nearest bus stop is to your home, Knox County Schools has a website set up.
