Illegal Immigrants Threatened With Eviction, Deportation

LOUISVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- An apartment complex manager has sent a threatening letter to residents, telling them if they are in the country illegally they must leave their homes by the end of the month or be arrested and deported.

J. Carlos Maciel said his management company and the building owner will not accept or allow any illegal aliens to live in the apartments.

The three-paragraph letter was addressed to all tenants of the 24-unit Lakeview Apartments in Louisville (LOO'ihs-vil) just south of Knoxville.

Mercedes Strollo, Hispanic hot line coordinator for Legal Aid of East Tennessee, said the letter violates anti-discrimination laws and the Tennessee Human Rights Commission's fair housing regulations.

Strollo said residents must be given 30 days' written notice before they can be evicted -- and even then they can only be evicted for a reason like nonpayment of rent.

Illegal immigrants are not just from MEXICO. Please do not be an IGNORANT. USA has so many people from other countries that came in with a visa and they did not go back to their countries and under the immigration law that makes them illegal aliens. Moreover, you do not see a landlord sending them letters. Just because somebody is white that does not mean they are legal. I do not know if you are blind, but sending a freaking letter just to Hispanics(DARK SKIN COLOR)stating that if you are not legal you will be deported that it is discrimination. I do think that the government should do something about the immigration law, but we cannot judge people because of their skin color. All of YOU that think that MEXICANS should go back home should say that about people from AFRICA, RUSSIA, SPAIN, VENEZUELA, ARGENTINA etc. You have to learn to be a human! Also, I assure you will not last a freaking day doing the jobs that they DO. I am ashamed that there is people like you here.

It is known that landlords have forms for prospective tenants have to comply with,to sign and comply with. I know I did. There is a credit check, a criminal back ground check, etc. You have to abide by the rules of the complex or they can ask you to leave. This should be a straight across the board rule for everyone. If I,as a citizen of the United States am required to do this,Why not an illegal alien? To require checks on who is living in a persons property is not discrimination nor racism.

These people are here illegally and should be deported. If they came to Lenoir City and checked green cards we would lose 25% of our population. I am sick & tired of hearing spanish in ever store I go into. They cry about rights but they take housing, jobs, & benefits away from American citizens. All illegals need to be rounded up & sent back to Mexico!

The landlord is doing the right thing. If the local and federal officials were doing their jobs, then eviction would be accomplished when they were deported back to their own country.

How can it be against the law to employ illegas immirgrants and not be against the law to house them? I think the apartment owners are doing the right thing and every landlord in America should do the same. They are not American citizens and they should not benefit from our laws if they are breaking them by being here illegally in the first place. Are they going to get a lawyer and fight this? No. Some agency will use our tax dollars to do it for them.

If they are illegal immigrants, then they should not have the same rights as an American. Put them in the streets and send them back home
