Arson suspected in East Knox County house fire

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)-- Fire officials believe arson may have been the cause of a fire that destroyed an East Knox County home Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out just before 8:30 a.m. in the 1500 block on Frank Meritt Lane.

Battalion Chief Jeff Devlin said the house was an older, abandoned home. He said there was no power inside the home and the person who lived there is in jail.

"We have no doubt we'll find who did this," Devlin said.

Melvin Merritt, who lives across the street, said the house didn't always sit empty. He said he saw cars come and go.

"Last night I was sitting watching tv and noticed light shining through window there," Merritt said. "A flashlight was shining around the house there. Like they were looking for something."

Merritt also noticed a white Ford truck parked behind the home. It is unknown if the truck is connected to the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
