SMYRNA, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Workers at the Nissan plant in Smyrna will receive more than three quarters of a million dollars in back wages. The U.S. Department of Labor recovered $787,548 in back wages for 124 employees who performed work on a federally funded project at the plant.
Labor investigators determined the workers were being underpaid and not receiving fringe benefits to which they were entitled. Investigators found that 48 employees were misclassified as independent contractors and were not included on the company’s certified payroll. As a result, those employees were paid less than the required wage.
