Carter elementary teachers and staff get ready to open brand new school

Knox Co. The lights are on at the new Carter Elementary School and before the kids sit in their desks, there's still a lot of work to be done.

Teachers and administrators were busy Tuesday setting up the school, Principal Shay Siler tells us they're putting the pieces together, "We are just setting up as much as possible so that when the students do come in they are welcomed into a true school setting."

There were many complaints about the old Carter Elementary School. There was chipped paint and cramped spaces.

3rd grade teacher, Amy Needham tells us this is a better learning environment.

"There are no stairs here," she says,"no hardwood floors, everyone is on one floor now."

A larger building, a shiny gym, and new technology.

"Yesterday we were trained on using the iPads," says Needham, "and today they're teaching us the smart boards, it's overwhelming at times but it will be good for the students."

With more space, comes a few more students.

"We've added a pre-k class so we're excited about that," says Principal Siler.

And the county's excited too, Carter is the first school in Tennessee with no debt, paid for in cash.

Which in turn, means good news for taxpayers.

School starts on August 12th.
