School bus crash brings awareness to neighborhood hazard

SOUTH KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)- Around 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, a Knox County School bus was struck by another vehicle.

According to investigators, the driver of a Hyundai was heading north on Widener Road at Bays Mountain Road, when the car hit the front of the bus.

"The car kind of hit us," said student Ronnie Murphy.

"It just stunned us all," said student John Taylor.

20 students from South Doyle Middle School were on the bus, none were hurt. The driver and passenger of the car refused medical treatment.

Neighbors in the area say the curves known for causing wrecks. Some guessed there's been as many as 500 in the last 50 years.

"The curve is so sharp that if you're over just a little bit, that person's gotcha," said neighbor Susan Woods.

Woods has had her own wreck on the curve, forced off the pavement by another driver.

She and her family have tried to fix the problem for the last 50 years even offering up part of their own land for the county to straighten out the curve.

"They came out and looked at it and said 'it's too much money.'" said Woods.

But Woods says the county has told her family it would be too expensive to blast away the rock along the road.

The bus crash investigation is ongoing. It's not clear yet if charges will be followed against the driver of the Hyundai.
