KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Saturday morning was filled with smiles, hugs and candy, but the event local kids look forward to each year almost didn't happen.
"Everything we had got destroyed. And so we had to start two months ago with nothing," Food on Foot president Carolyn Jarnagin says.
Cold weather made a pipe burst and flood Food on Foot's warehouse. The organization was devastated and their mission was in jeopardy.
"I had two little girls tell me, if you didn't get us an Easter basket, we wouldn't have one," says Jarnagin.
Word then started to spread.
"Strangers I didn't even know heard about the flood, and they came and they just started unloading their cars," she says.
All of these families are getting Easter baskets because of the generous donations from the community, like six-year-old Gabee Mayes. She raised $920 by putting collection cans around her school and giving stickers to kids who donated.
"If they didn't get an Easter I would feel sad," she says.
She's not the only one.
Help even started pouring in from out of state, eventually doubling the amount Food on Foot originally had.
"Each thing we got, I felt like they were personally giving it to me, because I want these children to have," she says.
The faces on the families leaving with bags of goodies say it all.
"I know God's there and he'll help us anyway that he can," Jamie Felmey says.
"It helps out a lot. A lot of families around here don't have much," Coy Skyles says.
"I just don't know how I can thank everyone," says Jarnagin. "I'm just gonna leave it in Jesus' hands to thank them for me."
The organization also gave out more than 700 special bags of food to families for an Easter meal.
