KNOXVILLE, (Tenn.) -- Chris Newsom loved baseball and the people who loved him, hit the diamond Monday night for the 'Chris Newsom Memorial Tournament.'
People filled Halls Community Park for the event that's been going on for the past five years. The park's president says the crowds get bigger every year, people supporting the Newsom family and the Chris Newsom Scholarship Fund.
Two Halls High School seniors were recognized. Luke Thomspon and Sydney Hall are this year's scholarship winners.
Thompson said, "It's a great help for college. I'm trying to go to Northeast State. I want to be a firefighter for the city of Kingsport."
"I'm attending Lee University next year and I'm majoring in political science and it will definately help with finances and trying to get through school, so I'm very greatful and I thank God for it," said Hall.
This tournament and helping kids succeed has helped Mary and Hugh Newsom get by during the toughest years of their lives.
"This means a lot to us because this is something good that's come out of something bad," said Mary.
