KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(WVLT) -- Sarah Moore Greene, one of Knoxville's most respected leaders in civil rights to the classroom, was laid to rest today after she passed away last week at the age of 102.
The "Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church" held a "homecoming celebration" at 11:00 this morning.
The funeral service was followed by her burial in Madisonville.
After a private service last night, dozens of people gathered to share stories about how Mrs. Greene influenced their lives, including Governor Bill Haslam and two of Knoxville's former mayors.
Greene's nephew and last living relative says the service is about celebrating the life and the legacy she leaves behind.
Mrs. Greene was the first black member of the Knoxville School Board and a delegate to the Republican National Convention.
