Thousands of students turn out for UT vs. South Alabama

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- For some UT students, nothing compares to watching a Vols game in person.

"It's just incredible to go to the games because there's so many people there, no matter how we're doing. Because people always show up," said Krey Krotzback, a junior.

"It's just so fun to come here and hang out with all the new friends, all the sisters and everything," said Leah Bedro, a freshman.

But with the Vols playing almost all of their games on TV, many fans simply opt to stay home or watch it at a bar or restaurant.

"The atmosphere really - just having everyone together and just playing pool and you know, eating a little bit then watching it. Being able to be inside where it's not so hot. That's nice," said Wrylyn Snodgrass, a UT student who watched Saturday's game at Goal Post Tavern.

About 7,800 students filled the stands for the UT-South Alabama game - still 1,200 of the 9,000 tickets allotted for the game. And when it's not military appreciation week, there's normally more than 10,000 student tickets available. Coach Butch Jones wants to see those empty spots filled.

"We should sell out our student body tickets every single home game, that is the expectation that we have and it is up to me.
I will do anything and everything for our student body. We need them. We are all one Tennessee coming together," said Coach Jones.

Many heard the call and showed up to support their beloved Vols.

"The more students the better! It's always a bunch more fun when you have a bunch more people cheering you on in anything you do!" said Bedro.

"I don't necessarily know whether they'll do better or not, but I think that they'll try harder, play harder," said David Young, a junior.

- which is why they're hopeful the student section will be packed for next week's game against Georgia.

Overall attendance this week was just over 87,000 people. That's about the same number of fans who showed up when we played Western Kentucky. 97,000 fans attended the first game against Austin Peay.
