Community mourns after Linden Elementary student dies coming home from school

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) The Oak Ridge community is mourning after a Linden Elementary School 3rd grader passed away while being brought home on a school bus.

A neighbor to the family watched as the horror unfolded in front of her house, Tuesday afternoon.

"I was just praying that he did not die and that everything was going to be alright," neighbor Tawana Blakeney said.

According to a news release from the Oak Ridge School Superintendent, Dr. Bruce Borchers, the boy was found unresponsive on the bus as kids were being dropped off. He was taken to the Methodist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

"It is a very sad day for Linden Elementary, Oak Ridge Schools and the entire Oak Ridge Community. The thoughts and prayers of the Linden and Oak Ridge Schools’ staff go out to the family," Bruce said in a written statement.

Oak Ridge Fire Chief, Darryl Kerley said medics were on the scene in less than two minutes after they got the call.

The bus driver was already performing CPR when medics arrived and then took over.

Kerley commended her actions.

"The school bus driver did a phenomenal job. She took instructions over the phone from the 911 operator here in Oak Ridge, and she also took care of the rest of the children on the bus," Kerley said.

The boy's name has not been released, nor has the official cause of death. Grief counselors were on hand at Linden Elementary Wednesday morning for students and teachers.
